Custom or Prefabricated Glass Shower? How to Make the Right Choice

“Ah honey, look at the beautiful shower at RONA! It’s so much cheaper… and it’s gorgeous! Should we buy it?”

This scene plays out in many homes. When renovating a bathroom, a question often comes up: is it better to buy a prefabricated glass shower from a big-box store or to invest in a custom glass shower?

The affordable models offered in home improvement stores are tempting. We tell ourselves that we’ll save money and that, in the end, a shower is just a shower. But is it really the best choice in the long run?

At first glance, the two options seem similar. After all, they both serve the purpose of taking a shower… without feeling like your bathroom has turned into a municipal swimming pool.

However, once installed, the differences quickly become apparent: glass quality, hardware, adaptability to your space, durability, and finishing.

After completing hundreds of glass shower projects across Quebec, our team has noticed that many homeowners are unaware of the true differences between these two solutions.

In this article, we explain the benefits of each to help you choose the solution best suited to your project and budget.

If your bathroom has standard dimensions and your priority is price, a prefabricated shower can be an attractive solution.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a high-end finish, an installation perfectly adapted to your space, greater sturdiness, and better durability, a custom glass shower generally remains the best long-term investment.

Since every project is different, the right choice depends as much on your space as on your expectations.

Why Does This Question Come Up So Often?

A few years ago, homeowners had few options. Today, you can buy a complete shower in most big-box renovation stores or have a fully custom installation made.

This abundance of choice often creates confusion.

Online, many models look identical. The photos are beautiful. The dimensions seem similar. Yet, behind these images lie significant differences that are not always visible at first glance.

It’s a bit like comparing a ready-to-wear suit with a custom-tailored one. Both serve the same function, but the fit, the quality of materials, and the final result are not comparable.

Or, it’s like choosing a car. Some dream of a Range Rover for its look, others of a Cybertruck for its futuristic vibe. But when it comes to long-term reliability, many Quebecers continue to trust a Toyota or a Honda. After all, you still see Corollas and Civics on the road after 20 years! A glass shower is much the same: beyond appearance, it’s the manufacturing quality, durability, and everyday reliability that make all the difference.

The same principle applies to glass projects.

The Advantages of a Prefabricated Glass Shower

Before discussing the benefits of custom-made, it’s important to be objective.

A prefabricated shower meets certain needs very well.

A Generally More Accessible Purchase Price

The first advantage is obviously the initial cost.

Prefabricated models are mass-produced with standardized dimensions, which reduces manufacturing costs.

For a project where the budget is the top priority, this solution can be entirely appropriate.

A Quick Solution for Standard Dimensions

If your bathroom has very common dimensions and the opening matches the available sizes exactly, a prefabricated shower can be installed quickly.

This is particularly the case in some condos or rental buildings where several units use the exact same configuration.

An Attractive Option for Certain Real Estate Projects

In the real estate sector, many developers choose prefabricated models when they need to equip a large number of identical units.

When all bathrooms are built to the same dimensions, this approach allows for standardized installations.

However, this does not mean that this solution is suitable for all residential renovations.

The Limits of Prefabricated Models

This is generally where the differences begin to show.

Limited Adaptability to Your Space

Unlike a custom-made shower, a prefabricated model must adapt to your bathroom… and not the other way around.

Even if many manufacturers offer different sizes, these models remain standardized.

In a home, however, walls are rarely perfectly straight, and openings rarely correspond exactly to the dimensions offered in stores.

As a result, you sometimes have to modify the layout, adjust certain elements, or accept larger gaps between the glass and the walls.

With a custom-made shower, each panel is designed to the exact measurements of your project to achieve a much more harmonious integration.

Quality That Varies by Manufacturer

Not all prefabricated showers are created equal.

As with many renovation products, quality can vary from one manufacturer to another, both for the glass and the hardware.

At Vitrerie BV, Pierre-Hugues regularly notes that customers notice this difference as soon as they handle a door or look at the finishing details.

It’s not always something you can see in a photo… but it’s often an aspect you notice daily after installation.

A Question of Thickness… But Also Sturdiness

One of the most important differences involves the thickness of the glass.

Many prefabricated models use 6 mm or 8 mm glass.

At Vitrerie BV, the standard is a 10 mm (3/8 inch) tempered glass for custom showers.

Why this difference?

Because thicker glass offers better rigidity, a superior feeling of solidity, and a more stable structure over the years.

It’s not just an aesthetic issue. It’s also about comfort and durability. You open and close a shower door every day. Have you ever closed a door and seen the whole glass panel vibrate? Let’s just say it’s not the most reassuring feeling! With thicker glass, you feel the difference immediately.

Why Choose a Custom Glass Shower?

While prefabricated models meet certain needs well, a custom glass shower offers a level of quality, customization, and finishing that is hard to match.

This is the preferred choice for the majority of homeowners who want to renovate their bathroom once… and do it right.

Every project starts with precise measurements. The goal is not simply to install a shower door, but to create a cohesive unit that integrates perfectly into your space, even when the walls, floor, or ceiling have slight irregularities.

It is this precision that often makes all the difference once the project is finished.

The 8 Differences That Truly Matter

1. A Shower Designed for Your Bathroom… Not the Other Way Around

Few bathrooms are perfectly square.

Over the years, houses shift slightly. Walls can be out of square, and dimensions often vary by a few millimetres.

For a prefabricated model, these gaps can complicate installation.

Conversely, a custom shower is manufactured to the exact dimensions of your space. Each glass panel is cut to fit your reality, resulting in a much more seamless look.

This is also what makes more complex projects possible, such as walk-in showers, frameless installations, or specific configurations.

2. A Sturdier Structure Thanks to Thicker Glass

We often talk about a shower’s design… much less about its thickness.

Yet, it is one of the first things you notice when you open the door.

The glass used in custom shower projects is generally 10 mm (3/8 in.) tempered glass.

Why? Because thicker glass provides:
