One thing is certain: the shower is the centrepiece of a new bathroom. It can completely transform the design of your space. So it’s important to think carefully about it.

What Is the Ideal Size for a Shower?

THE question we get asked most often. In fact, there is no magic size. Everything can be custom-made—we’ve even made a shower for a dog before. However, as with everything, there are still minimum requirements that must be met. Here is the list:

Our biggest project? A 10 x 10 foot (120 x 120 inch) shower in a Ville Mont-Royal residence, with multiple showerheads, built-in speakers, and coloured LED lights. When the budget allows… anything is possible, anything!

What Size Should a Doorless Shower Be?

When you remove the shower door, you’re talking about a walk-in shower or a threshold-free shower. The distinctive feature of this type of custom shower is that the floor must slope toward the drain. Without this slope, water will spread throughout the bathroom… a guaranteed tidal wave!

The minimum recommended by our experts is 60 to 72 inches (5 to 6 feet), especially if you have multiple jets.

Our main recommendation to customers who choose this type of shower is not to be cold-blooded: without a door, the steam escapes. If you tend to feel cold, you may end up shivering. Expert tip: add heated flooring to the shower. But remember, this must be planned right from the design stage.

Some customers also ask us if it is possible to add a door later on. Our answer is less encouraging: it’s difficult… in most cases, it means redoing everything.

In short, a doorless shower is very trendy and can be designed in different sizes. The important thing is to plan the project carefully from the outset (drain slope, heated floor, plumbing configuration, etc.).

What Wall Length Is Needed to Prevent Splashing?

Our answer is short and sweet: it all depends on your plumbing and the number of jets. The more there are, the more it splashes. There is no magic formula: the wall must be adapted to your configuration.

What Is the Minimum Opening Size for a Shower?

The openings depend on the type of door. Here are our recommendations:

Have you ever been at a family party and had a nephew, niece or friend ask you the age-old question, “What do you do for a living?

As a glazier, the simplest answer is often: “I install glass.”
But in reality, our profession is far more complex and fascinating than this phrase suggests. We’re much more than glass fitters. We’re passionate experts who master every aspect of the material: from its chemical composition to its technical and aesthetic applications.

In this article, we take you behind the scenes of the glazier’s trade – a trade as transparent as the products we install!

What Does a Glazier Do?

The glazier’s trade involves installing, repairing and replacing various glass products (windows, display cases, partitions, shower doors, pool enclosures, mirrors, etc.) in residential, commercial and industrial environments. The work includes handling materials such as glass, mirrors, aluminum and other metals used in modern structures.

A Precision Craft

Every project is unique. You must know how to analyze what’s needed and take measurements down to the millimetre (because a small measurement error can create disasters). Imagine, one millimetre too much for a recessed shower door… oops, you have to go back to the cutting board quickly and deal with the customer’s dissatisfaction. Each installation must also be adapted to the characteristics of the space and the customer’s expectations. Some places are more surprising than you might think! We see it all. What Business Sectors Does a Glazier Work In?

Glaziers operate in several sectors. The most common include:

Construction: installation of glass railings, glass doors, skylights and glazing in new buildings.

Glass, according to our famous Wikipedia, was created over 100,000 years ago. That’s to say that its use is ubiquitous in our everyday lives. Glass is a super-resource that is increasingly used in all sectors of activity.

What Are the Main Tasks of a Glazier?

As with any resume, there’s always the “other related tasks” section. That’s our case, yes, but if we want to keep it simple, here are the 4 main tasks we perform regularly.

Measuring and cutting glass:
Accurately calculate and cut glass to project specifications.
Fitting and installation:
Install partitions, showcases and other glass elements with care, ensuring safety and watertightness.
Repair and replacement:
Repairing cracks, replacing broken glass or modernizing existing installations.
Insulation and safety:
Install insulating glass to improve energy performance and safety glass (laminated or tempered) to protect occupants.

With a little more context, a typical day might look like this (this is a fictional case):

First, we grab our coffee or double espresso, stretch out and head off to our first customer: Monsieur Julien Poulin. Once at Julien’s, he serves us a cup of coffee (because we’re nice people), and we then get serious again by taking out our super-precise measuring kit! It’s time to calculate the new shower door with meticulous precision! This is perhaps one of the most important steps in any glass project. We confirm to the customer that everything is ready for cutting and that we’ll do the installation in a few days.

Next, we’re back on the road to our second customers, Robert and Mélanie, where we’ll spend most of the day fitting and installing railings along the staircases. This task is carried out in conjunction with other expert glaziers, to ensure safe and correct handling and installation of the glass. At every stage of installation, we make sure that everything is done with care while keeping the premises clean for Robert and Mélanie. After just a few hours, they were delighted with the final result! (check out our Google comments ;)).

In the afternoon, appointment with Ghislaine to repair her glass partition. Believe it or not, her young child drove his electric car into the glass because he thought a chimera was going to catch him. Repair done! Everyone’s happy.

Then it’s back to the factory to validate the custom glass cuts for the next day’s customers. We do our follow-ups, prepare quotes for new projects and close our computers to move on to our second passion!

What Makes a Good Glazier?

To excel in this profession, several qualities are essential. He (she) must be handsome, good-natured and kind! Joking aside, a glazier must be skillful, precise and familiar with safety standards. In addition:

Be precise and meticulous: every cut must be perfect. One millimetre too many can be damaging! Going back to the cutting board means high costs, delays and dissatisfaction for everyone.

Be in good physical condition: working with heavy glass panels requires strength and endurance. It’s heavy, heavy!

Manual dexterity: handling glass requires care and agility. It’s slippery and fragile and, unfortunately, there are no hidden handles in the glass to help us transport it easily.

Be a natural team player: collaboration is essential on construction sites. We do work with many different trades and contractors. When working as a team, projects are always more beautiful!

Resourcefulness: Every project brings its challenges. We deal with puzzles on a regular basis.

How Do You Become a Glazier in Quebec?

In Quebec, there are two main routes to glazier training.

First,

You can take a specialized training. The DVS (Diploma of Vocational Studies) in Glaziery Assembly and Mechanics (1350 hours) teaches the basics and advanced techniques of the trade.

Alternatively,

You can learn on the job. Some glaziers develop their skills directly in the workplace, supervised by seasoned experts.

Note that a high school diploma (DES) is required to access these training courses.

Once a glazier has chosen his or her apprenticeship path, he or she can work independently or within a construction or renovation company.

Glass railings, or glass guardrails, transform a classic staircase into a bright, modern work of art. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, they are easy to maintain and offer longevity far superior to that of wood or other materials. Glass is also at the forefront of current trends.

Types of Glass Railing Installation

In the world of interior design and custom glass projects, glass railings and guardrails can be distinguished by the way they are installed, especially the type of hardware used to secure the glass. Here are some of the most common types used in the decoration and design field and by our customers:

Standoff Glass Railing

The first type of installation is the standoff glass rail. Some of our customers call them “puck rails.” This system uses anchors installed perpendicular to the steps or string. This type of glass railing works best on stairs with centre stringers. It preserves the full width of the treads, as the railing is fixed to the outside of the staircase.

However, this type of installation is not recommended for narrow stairwells, as the glass can encroach on the available space, especially when ascending or descending adjacent stairs.

This installation enhances the space and creates a sense of grandeur.

Spigot Glass Railing

Spigot glass railings are a more economical option for glass guardrails. This type of railing resembles a glass clamp system anchored to the floor. It is installed directly at the “nose of the floor” or “nose of the stairs.”

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Here are a few examples:

Base Shoe Glass Railing

Base shoe guardrails are the most durable over time. They resemble a complete moulding at ground level, making them easy to clean. The installation of base shoe guardrails is better suited for floors than for stairs, as a staircase must be specially designed to accommodate this type of system.

It is possible to embed a base shoe in the floor to minimize the visual impact of the hardware. However, this option must be planned in advance to ensure a perfect installation.

Post Glass Railing

This type of railing is similar to conventional models, but uses glass instead of metal wires, wooden beams, or horizontal or vertical lines as in steel railings. The glass panels are held in place by glass clamps attached to the posts, providing great strength.

This is an excellent compromise between a glass railing and a conventional railing. Post railings can be installed with or without a handrail, depending on the desired design.

Full-Height Glass Railing

These ramps are similar to glass partitions used to divide office spaces. Full-height ramps are anchored to the floor and ceiling, with the advantage of having no visible hardware to obstruct the view. This is an excellent option for limiting noise transmission between different floors.

Glass Railing and Safety!

Handrail: Construction Code Compliance

To comply with the construction code, all staircases must be equipped with a handrail. The code requires handrails to be installed 36″ above the floor.

Unfortunately, and this is important to know, leaning on the glass to go up or down a staircase does not comply with current laws and regulations.

Your handrail can be installed in a variety of ways: wall-mounted, fixed to the glass, or integrated directly into the glass. Different finishes and sizes are available to meet your aesthetic and practical needs. Your expert glazier can advise you free of charge on your specific situation.

Regulation of Glass Railing.

We’ve just discussed the importance of the handrail, but what are the other regulations? We provide you here with as much information as possible to help you in your research, but don’t forget to check the regulations specific to your situation.

Railings and guardrails must be 36″ or 42″ high to comply with the Construction code.
A height of 42″ is required for guardrails installed indoors, but only if the protected floor is 12′ or more from the ground outside the guardrail.
For stairs, the Construction code requires handrails to be 36″ high. However, we can design them to a height of 42″ for aesthetic reasons to ensure uniformity with all guardrails.

The colour choices are vast, but the basic options are brushed stainless steel or matte black. It’s also possible to opt for a matte white finish, but this requires the application of a highly durable, high-temperature baked paint, which can mean extra installation time.

Type of Glass for Glass Railings

Glass railings and guardrails are typically installed with 10 mm or 12 mm tempered glass, depending on the type of anchorage used. Tempered glass is essential here. Cutting round corners with this type of glass is out of the question, and here’s why. Imagine this scenario: Fanie, your childhood friend, visits your house for the first time. You’re sitting comfortably in your living room, proudly admiring your staircase with its magnificent glass railings. Then your youngest, Nathan (aka Indiana Jones), excited about Fanie’s arrival, runs down the stairs to join her. Except, disaster! His sock, dragging on the stairs, slips under his feet. And then, hop! He misses the last two steps and crashes into the last glass wall. Luckily, it was tempered glass! Otherwise we can’t imagine the damage… But all’s well that ends well, and Nathan stands up, a little shaken, but without a scratch! A great story to illustrate the importance of thick, tempered glass for glass railings!

What Is the STC Index?

A higher STC means better sound insulation (and therefore more peace and quiet!)
